Eupatorium fistulosum is a tall, striking upright, almost bamboo-like native. Its large crown-like pink flowers provide endless food for many wildlife species. Give it a big sunny area and it will reward you with a season filled with happy wildlife. Although the tall plants can look “messy” at season’s end, it is best to leave plants alone through the winter. The whole plant provides much hidden food for wildlife. And if cut stems fill with water, it can damage the plant for next season. Joe Pye is generally pest resistant and the leaves are unpalatable to deer.TRIVIA:  Unlike other members of the Aster Family, Eupatorium spp. flowers are composed only of disc florets with no rays.Flowers attract skippers, moths and bees.  The nectar is especially favored by butterflies and often two or more species can be observed foraging on a flower cluster.  Swamp sparrows feed on the seed.Interesting Notes:For more information on this plant, visit the USDA PLANTS Database: http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=EUFI14
